What is the DP (DisplayPort) interface?

DisplayPort (DP) is a digital video interface standard developed by the alliance of PC and chip manufacturers and standardized by the Video Electronics Standards Association. It is the first display communication port that relies on packetized data transmission technology.

The DP interface is mainly used to connect the video source with the display and other devices, and also supports audio, USB and other forms of data. Common devices of DP interface include notebook computer, monitor, home theater, etc.

DP interface is more powerful in audio and video transmission than HDMI. For example, if you use 3840*2160 resolution (4K), HDMI can only transmit 60 frames at most due to insufficient bandwidth, but DP can have 4K 60HZ capability very easily.

As an upgraded product of DVI, the most commonly used are standard DP and mini DP interface developed by apple. Compared with DVI, DP interface has made much progress, and there are qualitative changes in bandwidth and customizability.

At present, the latest version of dp1.4 supports signal transmission of 8K resolution and is compatible with USB type-C interface. Dp1.4 can support 4K 120Hz output of 10 bit color or 8K 60Hz output.

There are many advantages of DP interface. AMD multi-screen splicing technology must need DP interface.

In the AMD graphics card, it supports the latest multi-screen splicing display technology released by AMD. Taking three screen splicing as an example, AMD's hd5000 Series graphics card is designed with a DP interface. The user needs to connect with the display device supporting this interface through the DP cords to become the main display of three screen splicing display, and must be directly connected with the DP interface without any form of conversion. Therefore, the demand for a liquid crystal display capable of supporting a DP interface is gradually increasing for display fan users.

In addition, the DP interface has a high bandwidth. Since the first generation, the DP interface has reached 10.8gbps bandwidth and supports 2560 x 1600 12bit output. At present, the most popular dp1.2 in the market has reached 21.6gbit/s, surpassing hdmi2.0. The latest dp1.4 has a bandwidth of 32.4gbps and can support 8K 60Hz and 4K 120Hz HDR high resolution.

The DP interface is also free, which is completely royalty free in the real sense. It also has the advantages of internal and external interfaces compatibility, more reliable content protection technology, and maximum integration of peripheral equipment.

In terms of DP interface switching, DP to HDMI can realize bidirectional switching, and the transmission picture will not be distorted. The most common scenario is the transfer from the computer to the TV. During the transfer, multiple modes can be assigned.

DP and mini-DP

Mirror mode: computer and TV display the same picture, realizing the transformation from small screen to large screen; Expansion mode: one network multi-purpose mode, which makes use of the transfer between the computer and the TV or projection to play the picture on the TV or projection, and the computer can perform other operations.

DP to DVI is applicable to desktop / notebook with DP interface and connected to monitor / projector / TV. DP to DVI is one-way transfer. DP to DVI products can only be converted from DP to DVI. The DP terminal is connected to the computer host graphics card, and the DVI is connected to the display. Conversely, there is no display.

DP to VGA, DP and VGA interfaces can not be directly switched, and the adapter needs to add a chip, but generally the adapters in the market are added extra chip, so there is generally no need to worry about this problem.
